The Story Behind 4DEYE

Why we built it

With 20+ years of treating patients, orthopaedic and rehabilitation physicians, physical therapists, and KAIST-trained rehabilitation engineers met at one question.

01

“It just started hurting one day.”

It’s the sentence we hear most in the clinic. But once you have treated patients for years, you learn that pain rarely starts as suddenly as it seems. A knee that bends a little less on the stairs, a hand pressed to the lower back on standing up, the body had already been signalling for months, sometimes years.

The trouble is, there is no good way to catch that signal early. So most people see a doctor only after it hurts, and the visit usually starts with an X-ray or MRI of the bone and ligament structure.

That is exactly what the images miss, because movement breaks down before bone does. What if we could read that signal a little sooner? That question is where we met.

Function starts breaking down before the pain does.

“The structure looks normal.” The usual verdict from X-ray and MRI. Bone and ligament can look fine while movement keeps breaking down.

02

Rehabilitation stops at the treatment-room door.

The hardest-working patient often returns a week later back where they started. Not from laziness — alone at home, no one tells them if they are doing it right or if it is working.

Without someone saying “good, a little more”, anyone runs out of steam. So we asked: could the clinician’s voice follow the patient home?

So rehabilitation continues outside the treatment room.

03

One patient, and the record scattered everywhere.

The test in one clinic, the exercise plan on paper, progress left to memory. Patients started from scratch each visit, and clinicians struggled to show in numbers what had changed.

So we joined test, prescription, rehabilitation and re-test in one data flow, so patient and clinician see the same numbers on how movement has changed since last month.

04

We will not let technology replace the clinician.

We started as people who treat patients hands-on every day. We know good care comes from people. The frustration was how few people those hands could reach.

4DEYE does not replace a clinician’s eyes and judgement; it helps them reach more people. Letting one clinician watch over far more people’s movement — that is why we do this.

Research in hospitals, results in the field

University hospital teams and an open lab validate performance and safety; a public education programme tests it in the field.
